Effective Communication Skills
This training introduces participants to the fundamentals of effective communication. By exploring the meaning, process, barriers, and practices of communication, participants will become more aware of their own communication styles and learn techniques to improve understanding, empathy, and active listening in professional and personal settings. Through interactive activities and reflections, the session will help participants enhance self-awareness and strengthen interpersonal connections.
Training Session Program
📍 İzmir Biomedicine and Genome Center, Room 3004
9:00 – 9:30 |Opening, Introductions & Group Dynamics
The training begins with a participatory opening where participants introduce themselves, share expectations, and co-create the agenda together with the trainer. A short group dynamics activity helps build an atmosphere of openness and collaboration, laying the foundation for interactive learning throughout the session.
9:30 – 10:00 | What is Communication? Why Do We Communicate?
In this segment, participants collectively explore the meaning and purpose of communication. Through guided activities and discussion, they will identify why people communicate, what goals communication serves, and how these goals influence the way messages are shaped and received.
10:00 – 10:30 | The Mathematics of Communication
Communication is often assumed to be simple, yet many misunderstandings occur along the way. In this part, participants engage in a practical exercise that demonstrates how messages travel, where distortion may happen, and why misinterpretations arise.
10:30 – 11:00 | ☕ Coffee Break
11:00 – 11:30 | Communication Barriers
After the break, attention shifts to barriers that prevent communication from being effective. Instead of a theoretical lecture, participants experience first-hand how barriers such as assumptions, distractions, or incomplete information can distort meaning.
11:30 – 11:55 | Active Listening
This section focuses on the skill of listening as an essential part of communication. Through interactive exercises, participants practice techniques of active listening such as paraphrasing, asking clarifying questions, and demonstrating empathy.
11:55 – 12:20 | Developing Communication Skills through Self-Awareness
Here, participants are guided through an activity that helps them reflect on their own communication strengths, blind spots, and growth areas. The focus is on self-awareness: recognizing how we are perceived by others, how we present ourselves, and how our communication style affects relationships.
12:20 – 12:30 | Closing & Reflection
The training concludes with a short reflective closing where participants share their key takeaways and insights from the session.
