Scientific Communication Officer

Offer Description

The Izmir Biomedicine and Genome Center (IBG) is seeking a skilled Scientific Communications Officer for the RareBoost project (# 952346). Working closely with the ERA Chair holder, IBG’s researchers and stakeholders, she/he will develop and implement science communication strategies to increase public awareness, engagement, and understanding of the scientific research conducted at IBG’s Rare and Undiagnosed Disease Platform. The candidate will be expected to plan and execute communications strategies and provide the technical support necessary to implement them.  

Responsibilities:                                                                                                     

  • Collaborating with researchers to identify and highlight the key research findings and to translate scientific jargon into accessible language for non-expert audiences.
  • Supporting the communication activities for national and international projects.
  • Reviewing the content in our scientific communication materials to ensure they comply with regulatory scientific standards. 
  • Creating engaging content for various mediums such as websites, social media, press releases, print materials, exhibits, and videos to communicate research findings to a broad audience.
  • Organizing and coordinating outreach events such as public lectures, school activities, workshops, exhibits, and community engagement activities to promote the scientific research developed at IBG.
  • Assisting researcher in their writing by researching topics, developing templates, and providing feedback.
  • Supporting scientific events such as scientific seminars, workshops, and conferences.
  • Developing informational content for our website and social media pages in the form of blog posts, infographics, and case studies.
  • Providing administrative support to other units to ensure continuous improvement of IBG’s communication activities.

Skills/Qualifications

  • Editorial experience and a strong background in writing, editing, and proofreading scientific texts.
  • Superb research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as an effective member of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent social skills with the ability to efficiently interact with audiences of all ages and diverse backgrounds (scientific and non-scientific).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, including the ability to translate complex scientific content so that it can be understood by different audiences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) 
  • Strong grasp of social media trends and influencer landscapes.

Specific Requirements

  • Min. bachelor’s degree in a relevant research field (biological science, medicine, etc.)
  • 2+ years of experience in science communication
